The Lower Grand River Land Trust Inc. Protecting 1500 Acres!

What is a Land Trust?

A Land Trust is an incorporated, non-profit, charitable organization formed for the purpose of protecting and preserving the ecological, agricultural, scenic, historic or recreational lands in its care.

The Lower Grand River Land Trust Inc. is located in Cayuga, Haldimand County in south western Ontario in one of the richest ecological areas in Canada.

The Lower Grand River Land Trust Inc. is a volunteer driven, not for profit, non government charitable organization which was established and incorporated in 1994.  Its purpose is to protect the lands in its care and work with landowners who have properties in the lower Grand River Watershed.  Currently due to limited resources, The Trust has chosen to focus on the needs of the 1500 acres Ruthven Park National Historic Site. They will conserve this property through land management, conservation of the built heritage, education and setting an example of good stewardship for the community.

The Trust is one of 44 land trusts within the Ontario Land Trust Alliance,  and one of only two having heritage buildings.

Ruthven Park is made up of natural and cultural landscapes including farm fields, forests, wetlands, wildlife habitat, the former country estate of the Thompson family and the former town of Indiana.

The Land Trust has a governance board made up of 12 dedicated volunteers representative of the community. They set policy and budget and provide direction for staff. Volunteer based committees report to the Lower Grand River trust Inc.

Funding to maintain the Ruthven property is provided through the interest of an endowment fund generously donated by Marion Hartney, a relation of the Thompson family, rental of farm fields, admissions, special events, grants, memberships and donations.

Established by volunteers, the Trust has a desire to maintain this relationship and volunteers are always welcome. Sign up now!
